The UK has announced that it will relinquish its sovereignty over the Chagos Islands, which have been an Indian Ocean territory with significant strategic importance for years, to Mauritius after years of negotiations. This is a historic move. The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) had previously allocated the ccTLD .io as the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for the British Indian Ocean Territory, but this allocation would be nullified if the Chagos Islands were returned to the territory. Currently, many users and businesses view .io as a generic top-level domain (gTLD), rather than a country-specific one. Approximately 120 million .io domains have been registered worldwide, with most of them being associated with cryptocurrency-related companies. Some argue that such high usage might lead to the domain becoming a gTLD similar to .net or .org in time. |
